Why spend the winter in the UK when just 11 hours flying time from the UK there is a paradise. A stretch of coastline where between October and May the skies are unbelievably blue and the days long warm and sunny. Where dolphins leap out of the sea in the early morning, and where, beyond the long sandy beaches, lie tropical gardens of flowers and coconut groves caressing hotels of great charm. This paradise is Goa.
Vagator Beach - overlooked by the Chapora Fort. It's a steep climb down to the beach and many travellers come down from Europe and spend the winter just living on Vagator Beach.
Anjuna Beach - is around the rocky headland from Vagator and is an interesting place to meet people and watch the world go by. Anjuna is famous for its flea market.
Baga Beach - is the most northerly of this more "commercial" part of beach life in Goa. In Baga the beach huts are relatively sophisticated with electricity and tablecloths! Despite the hustle and bustle the fishermen still fish as they always have done. The "Casa Portuguesa" is one of the best restaurants for traditional local cuisine.
Palolem Beach - is also known as "Paradise Beach". This beach is south Goa is about a mile long and it provides seclusion and idyllic scenery.
Calangute Beach - has become nearly as busy and popular as Baga, with miles and miles of sandy beaches. Our favourite beach bar is "Lover's Bar" run by Louis and his wife Mina.
Candolim Beach - is the longest and quietest part of this stretch. At the point the beach is as wide as a football pitch and the beach bars and shacks are set back on the sand dunes.
Sinquerim Beach - is the longest and established and more sophisticated where the Fort Aguada Beach Resort, Taj Holiday Village and Aquada Hermitage are all situated.
Coco Village - is at the estuary of the Mandovi River just over the headland from Candolim and Sinquerim Beach. The water is shallow and the swimming here is superb.
South Goa is very different to the northern beaches. Apart from Bogmalo, it's basically a 15 mile long beach with about 12 hotels spread out at several mile intervals. The main areas of south Goa are:
Bogmalo Beach - only 300 metres long and dotted with a few beach shacks and good for swimming and diving.
Velsao - is by far the quietest beach. It is very beautiful and remote.
Colva - is the busiest of all the southern beaches. The beach is fantastic and the village has plenty of shops, bars and restaurants.
Cavelossim Beach - has become very popular in the last few years. The beach is long and wide and the area has developed into a village with shops, bars and restaurants.
Majorda Beach - is a beautiful area and is famous because of the established and popular Majorda Beach Resort.
Palolem Beach - is also known as "Paradise Beach". It's about 1 mile long and provides seclusion and idyllic scenery.
