Lanzarote Holiday Review

In January 2002 I flew out to the volcanic island of Lanzarote for a cheap Winter holiday in the sun, accompanied by my partner and a couple of friends. We flew out on Iberoworld charter airlines, through the tour operator First Choice. Ideally we were looking for plenty of sunshine and a relaxing break, and that was exactly what we got!
Lanzarote is situated just 70 miles from the North African coast and is the hottest of the canary islands. Flying into Arrecife airport, we noticed just how dark and volcanic the island actually looked, but upon arrival in the resort of Puerto Del Carmen we were pleasantly surprised!
The main beach is three miles long and is not as dark as you would find on other Canarian islands, as it's man-made. The seafront has plenty of bars, shops and restaurants, with the odd disco as well. Puerto Del Carmen is the liveliest resort on the island, although it's more cosmopolitan than San Antonio!
The old town has a lovely harbour area filled with seafood restaurants, and if you manage to get up early enough, you can see the fisherman coming back from sea with their daily catch!
While we were on the island, we had a couple of late nights while sampling the local nightlife, but we also decided to hire a car for a couple of days. This was relatively in expensive at £18.00 a day and allowed us to do some sight seeing.
The first place we decided to visit was the National Park, Timanfaya, which is filled with dried up volcanic lather and which you can drive through, to see the most astonishing landscape. Towards the top of the park at the top of a volcano we decided to go and have a meal at a restaurant that cooks the food over the volcano and you can see this being done.
On the way back from the national park, we decided to visit the house of Ceasar Manrique, a famous aritist born on the island who built his house into the side of a volcanic rock, and the swimming pool is heated from it's natural resources. There is also an art gallery of the artists work.
The accommodation that we stayed in was the Flora apartments ,which were situated in the old town. They were a 3* accommodation and had plenty of facilities including two decent sized pools. Although it was a twenty minute walk from the
seafront a taxi was only in the region of £3.00, which was easy enough to obtain for a night out!
The last place that we decided to visit was the main market in Lanzarote, which takes place once a week on Sunday in the old town of Teguise, here you can purchase absolutely anything and get a chance to practice your bartering skills.
Overall Lanzarote was a brilliant experience, with plenty of sight seeing or you can just relax on the beach and sample the local nightlife, the weather was fantastic at 80 degrees farenheit in the middle of January, you definitely couldn't go wrong!
I would recommend the island of Lanzarote to anybody.
